About
OUR HISTORY
Started in 1946 by a hardworking farmer and his wife from their family farm in the Mush Dahl Valley of New Ringgold, was an auction business that would span three generations and over 80 years of experience. Curtis Houser was a farmer, a truck driver, an auctioneer, and a father. Together with his wife Gwendolyn, they laid the foundation for one of the only three generation auction families not just in our area but in our great country.
Doug and Tim were the sons of Curtis and Gwendolyn. Growing up on a working farm, they learned the value of a hard days work. They were taught to work hard not just in the fields but also as they entered the family auction business. The golden rule of being truthful and treating others with respect and dignity was a basic understanding in the family. Treating each sale like it was there own was a founding principle because Curtis and Gwendolyn realized the items they were selling were not theirs but someone else’s life, someone else’s retirement, and someone else’s memories.
“Always Remember Your Roots” was one of Gwendoyn’s favorite sayings and remains one of our most treasured memories of her. Remembering how far we have come as a family and a business drives us to be better with each sale. To always remember the basisc idea of doing what is best for the seller and never taking the simple way out to make a quick buck.
Doug and Tim started their selling careers in the 1970’s. Doug is a graduate of Bloomsburg University and earned a degree in education. Specializing in Geography, Doug taught school for over 30 years while he became active as an auctioneer and a licensed real estate agent with Homestead Real Estate. Today, Doug is our senior auctioneer and is still very active in the every day operations of the business. In addition, he is the senior broker and owner of Homestead real estate giving Houser Auctioneers a unique advantage over many other auctioneers. Tim is Doug’s younger brother and is our current President of operations. Tim has been selling for over 40 years and maintains an expertise in farm equipment, coins, and antiques all while maintaining the equipment and supplies we use at every sale.
Jason is a third generation auctioneer and son of Doug. As a graduate of the Air Force Academy class of 1995, Jason spent 20 years in the Air Force flying the mighty A-10 Warthawg and serving as a recruiter for prospective Air Force Academy Cadets. Jason currently flies for Southwest Airlines as a captain but spends all of his off time involved in the family business. Jason has assumed his role meeting with clients, setting up sales, and is slowly trying to fill the massive shoes his Father has worn.
Nathan is the Tim’s son and a graduate of Penn State University. Majoring in electrical engineering Nathan gained experience post college and moved home assuming the role as head electrical engineer at Mack Volvo Trucks. Nathan spends most days at his 9 to 5 job but then spends his remaining time meeting clients, setting up sales and of course taking care of the family farm which remains our base of operations.
The fourth generation of Houser Auctioneers is in the works. For those who attend the auctions, you will sometimes see Tanya (Nathan’s sister) on the clerking stand and Ben (Jason’s son) acting as a runner and even clerk. Who knows what the future holds but the auction business has taught three generations the value of honesty and hardwork. We can only hope it will do the same for Ben and the fourth generation.
